Award-winning, British-born historian Richard Bell will discuss his book which describes what the American Revolution meant to the rest of the world beyond a few colonies’ almost amazing victory over and liberation from England. Repositioning the Revolution at the center of an international web, the American “War of Independence” would eventually have an impact on the lives and fortunes of millions of people around the world. It fundamentally transformed the way the world works, disrupting trade, restructuring penal systems, stirring famine, and creating the first global refugee crisis. A well-respected Smithsonian speaker, Bell's view of American history shifts everything we thought we knew about our creation story.
Richard Bell received a BA from the University of Cambridge and a PhD from Harvard University. He joined the Department of History at the University of Maryland in 2006, earned tenure in 2012 and promotion to the rank of full professor in 2020. He has published four books and more than a dozen articles and book chapters primarily on aspects of early American life.
Dr. Bell has held major research fellowships at Yale, Cambridge, and the Library of Congress. He received the National Endowment of the Humanities Public Scholar award and the Andrew Carnegie Fellowship.
