KEYNOTE SPEAKER: Dr. Peter Henriques
It's True -- Studying History Is Worth the Time & Effort
Dr. Henriques, a George Mason University professor emeritus of history, has written and lectured extensively about George Washington. His most recent work, George Washington: His Quest for Honor and Fame. Many of his books and articles mention Washington's deep interest in education despite his own limited educational opportunities.
For over 40 years AHS has honored those who have made noteworthy contributions to the preservation of Alexandria’s historic heritage. The High School History awardees are chosen by their teachers. A panel of local history experts including Scott Vierick, Dr. Pam Cressey, and Patricia Walker chose the two awardees for this year's History Awards.
T. MICHAEL MILLER ALEXANDRIA HISTORY AWARD Since 2010 the Alexandria History Award has been named in honor of the City’s most prolific research historian and former AHS President in recognition of his long and very distinguished service to the City of Alexandria. This award recognizes those who have provided many years of service to the preservation, research, or interpretation of the historic heritage of Alexandria. Nominations for the History Awards were accepted from the public in early 2025. A panel of local history experts chose the three awardees for this year's T. Michael Miller Award. AHS SPECIAL MERIT AWARD is bestowed in recognition of notable contributions to the Society and Alexandria history. Besides individually-engraved silver Jefferson Cups, each student will also be awarded scholarship to help with their continuing educational goals.
ALEXANDRIA HIGH SCHOOL HISTORY AWARD One outstanding history student from each of Alexandria's four high schools is given this award for academic achievement and scholarship in American history, as well as their awareness of the role history plays today. Winners are chosen by their teachers.
T. Michael Miller History Award
SETH TINKHAM is a former National Park Service employee and long-time member of the Alexandria Archaeological Commission (AAC), where he played a key role in preserving and enhancing several historic sites. He led the successful effort to add the Contraband and Freedman's Cemetery to the National Park Service's Civil Rights Network, the first Virginia location to receive that designation, and helped secure a developer-funded scholarship supporting preservation and craftsman trades for residents of the Samuel Madden Homes redevelopment. He continues to support preservation efforts through work on the Wilkes Street Cemetery Complex nomination and, in his current role as an Environmental Protection Specialist at the Department of the Interior, contributes to protecting historic resources nationwide.
AHS Special Merit Award
GAYLE CONVERSE, a member of the Alexandria Celebrates Women board, researched and developed the Alexandria Women’s History Walk, a self-guided tour highlighting the contributions of women to the city’s history. She also leads monthly tours and writes a regular column for the Alexandria Times focused on women’s history, helping to deepen community understanding of the vital role women have played, and continue to play, in shaping Alexandria’s story.
